Much as Pondside expressed regret over her roosters I have this morning ruthlessly disposed of some cactus. I have put them out in the porch in the hope of an early frost to take them to their demise. I have kept back the 4 best ones but the rest will have to take their chances.
Now that the shed is finished and I can have what's left of the end bed back I have planted out an apple tree that has made it through the summer planted in a big wicker basket and my big purple nana. The nana [ventricosom maurelii] was bought last summer as a 12" pot plant but has gone bananas [groan] It was transferred into my best big pot and overwintered in the porch and has rewarded me with gargantuan growth and now has a girth of 20". Even OH who is built like the proverbial brick built convenience had trouble lifting it into it's new home.
I don't like bank holidays. Everyone seems to be doing something except me. There is plenty that I should be doing but I haven't got the oomph today. I must do some homework for my CBT course as I have a session on Friday, the vac could go round and the usual pile of ironing beckons BUT coverage of the USA Open tennis starts this afternoon. No contest!
Well before that I'm off to stuff an elephant.
Enjoy what's left of the holiday.

Well go and get stuffed then!! I have a small cacti (cactus, not sure which is the correct term) in my kitchen and it doesn't seem to do much. In fact, it doesn't do anything. I don't expect it to talk of course but it isn't growing. Are they supposed to?
I agree with you on Bank Holidays. I'm always fearful of going anywhere in case of being stuck in traffic and as I am extremely claustrophobic I avoid crowds as much as I can.

I use exactly the same method to get rid of unwanted plants. I've got the most enormous ponsettia that refuses to die. As a present from my son's partner, I don't actually want to throw it away but I feel it should have decently passed on by now. It's outside the french doors as we speak and I think the slugs are having a little chew, yes!
I've lost my ooomph too Toady and it is not even a bank holiday here it is however hot and I have no inclination to do anything but be lazy which is unfortunate bearing in mind amount of things I ought to be doing!!!
I quite like cacti but a country cottage is not the right setting for them.
Amazing plant.
Only half a Bank Holiday up here so have worked most of the day.
Will chill out this evening though.
I assume you will be stuffing the elephant into a trunk, I had quite forgotten it was a Bank Holiday I thought it was Sunday until you said it was Monday, hey ho thats what its like when you get Old and Blonde.
Blossom
I don't like Bank Holidays either. I don't work Mondays anyway and don't like to go out as there may be too many visitors about. There is that feeling that you should be doing something 'different' isn't there?
just had to see it you temptress you..xx...do we all do this with unwanted plants??xo
The big purple nana is gorgeous, Toady! Why not pot the cactus and sell is in your shop?
I loathe cacti! My Mum is so proud of her prize-winning cacti [she has about 90 of the horrible things] and when I was a child I used to love sticking cocktail sticks into them. Didn't achieve anything by this act of vandalism, but being grounded meant I could curl up with a good book! Good, another person with apathy towards bank hols.
Hi Toady. Just had a look at your website and it's fab! Love the products you clever thing. Just had a read through of some of your blogs too after what feels like a lifetime. Good to catch up again. Only three million other people to read through now!!! xx
My daughter would like a cacti in her room, never been a big fan, but there are worse things she could ask for!!
Talking of stuffing about to stuff my draught excluder, anyone with holey jumpers watch out
I have a cactus that I bought when I was seven years old! It is still only about eighteen inches high and has not ever shown me any gratitude for enduring it for all these forty odd years. But I can't bring myself to do the frost thing! However, instead I have been hacking down overgrown shrubs and misplaced saplings that are wobbling the walls. jxxx
