Retro Toady

The trouble with our house is that being 1930's and mucked about a bit by previous owners, it's very hard to know which way to go when decorating. Shabby chateau it aint, neither is it cosy cottage or lofty Victorian. The only thing we did know when we started was that the hideous Bradstone fireplace that extended into the alcoves had to go [ it went ]. I found myself being drawn to plain walls and clean lines. Not really minimalist because I'm far to much of a slut to maintain the level of tidiness that it would command. So I hit upon the idea of 70's Danish teak furniture and set about Ebay with my usual gusto. Lovely items appeared but had to be quickly ruled out due to being pick up only and many many miles away from Devon. Desperation was setting. I scoured our local charity shops here in Bideford and the small ads and drew a great big zero. Yesterday we ventured over to Barnstaple to get carpet and I remembered the Jigsaw Project. This charity was set up not only to make money but to teach furniture restoration skills to the disabled. Recycling at it's best. Previous visits have not been too fruitful but yesterday, bingo. My eye fell upon a lovely wall unit. Not too big with sliding glass doors, some drawers and a cupboard and solid teak, not veneer. Likewise a TV stand and a small coffee table. The man from the workshop was called and he promised to treat the few scratches that they inevitably had. Now for the good bit. All three pieces, including the scratch treatment and delivery to Bideford, £70. Everyone's a winner.

The carpet is going down tomorrow so by the weekend we should be all finished.
Piccies to follow.

My eldest son, Tom, used to make furniture for Heals! Excellent quality of course. Well done Toady for the bargain hunting and really bad luck on your ebay curtain debacle which I have just caught up with. Looking forward to seeing the pictures xx

Bargain Toady and the Jigsaw project benefits too, now that's what I like to hear. Funnily enough decided to spruce up the kitchen here in the apartment, quick job, few tiles slapped on, but oh no discovered beautiful brick wall underneath..... ARGHHHHHH, now its just shabby :)

I just love a bargain too. Oddly enough I've just evicted a (very battered) 1970s solid teak folding dining table table as it didn't suit my Welsh cottage.

Yippee that all your hard work will be finished by the weekend - I can't wait to see the pictures.

Our Devon visit is bringing us to the north of the county for four days - Petton Cross, Shillingford, to be precise.

Can't resist a bargain myself, just about to look on Ebay for some cushions that I should have bought four of, but only got two...
I love your original use of the word slut - my mother says that - mucky slut, meaning one who doesn't keep her house nice and clean! It has rather a different meaning now, but the old fashioned one is spot on!

Hiya Toady! Sounds like you got a bargain there, good for you. Have just been having a good old catch up with your blogs, sorry I haven't been around lately, you know how it is. Sounds like you have the same sort of relationship with Ebay as I do with TradeMe. Next week we are picking up three items from Auckland - rug, bathroom vanity and a wall hung cupboard!
