Is it Spring?

We have been blessed with two days of spring like weather this week so I ventured out into the front garden to see what this cold winter had left me, and for a quick tidy. Last summer I planted a Cornish corner with plants that I bought on holiday. Sadly only one appears to have survived. An echium that put on wonderful growth in last summers' rain is now just a dried out stick and an aoleum a slimey mess. I have left the echium in the vain hope that it may re sprout from underneath, had a quick weed around, planted some polyanthus into the tubs and swept out the porch.
Our house faces south so the front garden is now full of the promises of Spring but the back is still in the depths of winter and is a good two months behind. The walk from front door to back takes you from one season to the last and any work out there will have to wait till the sun gets high enough to get over the roof and warm things up a bit. I'm dying to get the protection of my purple banana tree and see if it has survived.

We're slowly getting used to the idea of being grandparents. I can't wait to get round the baby shops and I've started looking at young Mums around the town to see what kind of baby transport is de rigeur. You never see a proper pram these days. I started off with a coach built Silver Cross pram [second hand] and then proceeded to a wonderful chrome and burgundy cord pushchair. Of course the problem with both was that they were bulky and very heavy and I suppose would look positively archaic now. Well we've got till October to wait for the new arrival. Perhaps it will be born on my birthday, October babies are the best, of course.

I'm sure an October baby will be like a lovely ripe rosy apple! I had a lovely navy and white silver cross for my first daughter - round here only the travelling people use them now. I particularly like the bunny in the centre of your header photo - do you make them for sale? PM me if you do. Best wishes.

I had two seedling Echiums from a plant bought in the Isles of Scilly 5 years ago. One of them is a goner but the other one is recovering. It is sprouting from the nodes. They are both in the front garden and the live one is quite close to the house so it must have got sufficient warmth to survive.
Best of warm wishes for the coming grandchild - I find mine a great source of pleasure.

Do they still make Silver Cross prams I wonder? They were such elegant baby carriages weren't they, so much more attractive than these buggies, three-wheeled ankle bangers that seem de rigeur these days. I had to make do with Mothercare's best.. such memories the very mention of it brings back, of walks in the sun and wind and rain along the seafront, through the park, into the town to do the shopping.
Still, as someone said to me recently, nostalgia's OK, but there's no future in it!

I married an October baby so I'll concur with them being the best!
I was a resident in a big blue silver cross pram, it did the three of us apparently before surrendering to become a go-cart for one of my brothers.

Toady, I love the way you describe having one season at your front door and another in the back garden!

That October baby-to-be is so lucky that you will be grandmother. I know that you will be finding and making all sorts of treats for this coming attraction.

Great to hear a baby is on the way. I don't know where you live, but winter has returned to West Sussex.

Those days of spring were bliss weren't they - back to freezing cold again here. It's so lovely seeing everything coming out though. Huge congrats again on your daughter's baby, what an exciting time.

Being a grandparent is the best! I'm so glad that you're having such a good time planning and dreaming about your October grandchild.
Good luck with that garden - perhaps some of those plants will come back, given some warm weather.

I am a very new Grandmother, but I can recommend it. I also had a Silver Cross with lovely big wheels, pushing Phoebe around in her small carry cot pram is just not the same, thr kerbs are lethal. Get those needles out Toady, an October baby will need a good selection of hats.

Very warm congratulations on your news - a lovely bundle of joy to look forward to as winter approaches. And what a lucky baby it will be to have you for a grandparent. Now, all you have to decide is, are you going to be Nan, Nannie, Gran, Granny............ decisions, decisions.xx
